Gov. Haley Barbour says switching state employees to a four-day work week would help employees save on fuel costs.Barbour plans to release some recommendations to help schools and local governments deal with high fuel costs. Several Mississippi school districts, municipalities and counties are discussing means of reducing fuel costs, and a four-day work week is among proposals under consideration
The recommendations will be made by the time school starts, but some could go into effect earlier, Barbour said. He said switching state employees to four 10-hour days would save employees the cost of driving to and from work on the fifth day.
The switch won’t save the state any money directly, said Phil Pepper, an economist for Mississippi. He said it might help retain some workers who might otherwise quit because it’s too expensive to drive to their jobs
