Why Now?

The media keeps talking about how this is the first attack on the Capitol Building since the War of 1812, when Admiral George Cockburn’s troops burned the White House. Nonsense. In 1954, Puerto Rican nationalist Lolita Lebron stormed the House of Representatives with the intent to bring international attention to Puerto Rico’s struggle for independence. Five members of Congress were wounded in the raid. She was sentenced 49+ years and ultimately served 25 years, after being granted clemency by Jimmy Carter. How many years/weeks, if any, will today’s mob serve?

In 1971, the Weather Underground planted a bomb in a restroom in the Senate wing of the capitol. The blast caused hundreds of thousands of dollars, but no injuries.

I our wildest dreams did we ever consider an attack as we witnessed on 06 January…..I will admit there were some that had the idea but they never came to reality.

The question has been asked….why now?

It has been brewing beneath the surface of our democracy since the days of Reagan….then started getting louder with Newt in the 90s……and then entered the Tea Party and the election of Obama….with the election of Trump the ideas had a national leader……and then the unthinkable happened.

The dangerous attempt at a coup of the Capitol didn’t happen in a vacuum. A culture of misinformation — even from those who should know better — has played a role in distancing too many people from the realities our country faces, including climate change.

This week’s violent invasion of the Capitol by pro-Trump insurrectionists was the latest and starkest example of the damage caused by decades of right wing conspiracy and misinformation campaigns. A straight line runs from the deregulation and consolidation of the media in the 1980’s which gave rise to Fox News to the conspiracies about the Clintons in the 1990’s, through 9/11 “trutherism” and Obama-era “birtherism,” to the unhinged belief by about a third of Americans that the 2020 election was “rigged and stolen” from Trump. Trump’s actions have not occurred in a vacuum; they are a symptom of a right wing that has relied on lies and conspiracy to undermine our democracy and threaten our collective future.

While Trump lit the match by inciting the thousands gathered in support of his lies to riot and sack the Capitol, the fuel for the fire was built by decades of lies spread by right wing elected officials and media. Now, significant segments of the population do not believe basic facts. In a poll taken in December, 72% of Republicans did not trust the 2020 election results. When such a large segment of the population disregards the legitimacy of our democratic processes, the system cannot function.

The only way to combat these false beliefs is to address them head on, boldly embrace the truth, and expose and hold perpetrators of misinformation accountable for the situation they created. That is why it is so important that Speaker Pelosi and others in Congress engage in a full investigation of how the sack of the Capitol was allowed to happen, pursue all measures to remove Trump immediately, expel complicit Congress Members, and hold others who contributed to this accountable.

Once Trump leaves off ice will that bring an end to the disruptions?

My opinion is no not at all.

Trumpism is a term that just five years ago few people, if any, would have guessed could have existed.

But here we are – with an exuberant base of followers that has in some cases risked their health and safety to attend large-scale rallies, who have lost jobs and personal relationships for sharing bigoted remarks by their leader, and most recently have taken part in a deadly domestic invasion of the US Capitol Building.

Will these trends continue? It’s hard to predict without first asking what will happen to Trumpism, the loyal following of outgoing president Donald Trump that comprises a loose assortment of adherents to white nationalism, science scepticism, and indignation at the mainstream media.

The big question is whether the Biden and Harris fix the divisions within the country….I am not optimistic…….

Joe Biden’s promise to heal the nation might have been regarded as the kind of blandishment expected from any new leader taking power after the divisive cut and thrust of an American election.

Even before the assault on Capitol Hill, Biden warned that deepening partisanship was a threat to the stability of the United States.

“The country is in a dangerous place,” he said during the election campaign. “Our trust in each other is ebbing. Hope is elusive. Instead of treating the other party as the opposition, we treat them as the enemy. This must end”.

The militias will remain….the social divisions will remain….the country will remain divided until the American people come to their senses.

A new president does not guarantee calm.
