Thoughts On The Media

Disclaimer: This is my opinion on the presentation of what we call “the news”….and is not intended as a slight on any disaster or tragedy.

It is no secret that I am not a fan of the MSM….I believe that they are doing more damage than informing.

The mainstream media (MSM) no longer presents the news instead it is a source for propaganda.

Let me explain.

Americans think they have an unlimited variety of entertainment and media options right at their fingertips. But it is all a lie. This illusion of choice was fabricated by the media elites. In the early 90s before the mainstream adoption of the Internet, the media landscape used to be simple and straightforward. Today, 6 media giants control a whopping 90% of what we read, watch, or listen to.

Objectivity in journalism is an illusion created by the elite class to give the appearance of balanced news. However, there is no such thing as unbiased news. Journalists who work for these six corporations answer to their owners and ultimately serve their agendas. For example, no logical thinking person will expect Washington Post to write a fair and objective story about its owner, especially a story that Jeff Bezos reportedly cheated on his wife. The point of all these is that the media outlets don’t necessarily serve the interest of the people they control, instead, they serve the interests of their owners.

Now you have the ammo to find the truth in the MSM  (that is a trick there is very little truth in the MSM).

All of this was made possible by Bill Clinton and his Telecommunications Act of 1996.

For those that doubt my assertion…then read the Act for yourself…..(that will not happen but it is there for those that care)….

Yes I know it is a long read…..and most will not attempt this but if you want to know what is what then step away from the game and learn something!

In my years to studying political philosophy I have looked at what is termed as “media hegemony”…..

Media hegemony is a perceived process by which certain values and ways of thought promulgated through the mass media become dominant in society. It is seen in particular as reinforcing the capitalist system. Media hegemony has been presented as influencing the way in which reporters in the media – themselves subject to prevailing values and norms – select news stories and put them across. (wikipedia)

Now that it is defined…..think about today…..the Covid coverage.

Do not get me wrong I know that this virus has devastated the nation and the world….we need to know the facts as they become available but on the same hand we do not need every horror story there is which is what the media is doing.

Yes people dying from the problems created by the illness and by the lack of response for a year is not acceptable….but again I do not need to know what happened in Rhode Island or NYC or Kansas….I do need the facts as they come out.

Then there are these endless worthless wars of intervention…..that just keep being fueled by the M-IC to protect their massive profits….and then there is the lack of actual information being reported by the MSM.

The truth is the national security apparatus does not want the people to know the facts about these wars.

An especially dangerous threat to liberty occurs when members of the press collude with government agencies instead of monitoring and exposing the abuses of those agencies. Unfortunately, collusion is an all-too-common pattern in press coverage of the national security state’s activities. The American people then receive official propaganda disguised as honest reporting and analysis.

The degree of collaboration frequently has reached stunning levels. During the early decades of the Cold War, some journalists even became outright CIA assets. Washington Post reporter Carl Bernstein’s January 1977, 25,000-word article in Rolling Stone was an extraordinarily detailed account of cooperation between the CIA and members of the press, and it provided key insights into that relationship. In some cases, the “journalists” were actually full-time CIA employees masquerading as members of the Fourth Estate, but Bernstein also confirmed that some 400 bona fide American journalists had secretly carried out assignments for the ClA during the previous 25 years. He noted that “journalists provided a full range of clandestine services – from simple intelligence gathering to serving as go-betweens with spies in Communist countries. Reporters shared their notebooks with the CIA. Editors shared their staffs.”

How the National Security State Manipulates the News Media

More on the lousy track record of the MSM in our endless wars…..

The US War Machine Doesn’t Want Us to Take War Personally

The powers that be learned their lesson from Vietnam……where journalists had access to the conflict and were allowed to report what they observed….that all changed and now we only get information that the Pentagon wants us to have and it is NEVER what is actually happening.

The news is no longer the news….it is hour after hour of editorializing….take the Chauvin trial as an example…..the “media” every minute of the thing….granted it is important but every minute holds no news and just a report as it was before Clinton would help better inform the public.

The corporate owned media serves NO purpose other than selling the policies that the owners find necessary.

The problems this country is dealing with today can be laid at the feet of corporations and their propaganda arm….the Mainstream Media……

The answer is to look at all ‘news’ with skepticism and do the work to find the “rest of the story”.

What Has Happened To Our Middle Class?

This is a fun subject for an aging radical as myself…..why?

Just the changing definition of the term “Middle Class”….originally it meant the bourgeoisie not the workers……but now the table is turning and they are same class…that is if you know anything about “classes”.

the bourgeoisie

the middle classes
(in Marxist thought) the ruling class of the two basic classes of capitalist society, consisting of capitalists, manufacturers, bankers, and other employers. The bourgeoisie owns the most important of the means of production, through which it exploits the working class.
And yet the media has turned the two separate classes into the same class.

Everyone loves the middle class. Everyone claims to be middle-class—some to put a gloss on their sketchy escutcheons, others to dodge chastisement for their awkward riches. But in fact both the socioeconomic reality and the concept of the middle class have been turned on their heads and, at the same time, trivialized into a mere lifestyle choice.

Economically, the middle classes were once proprietors, self-employed owners of property and their own labor. Morally, they were the equivalent of “solid citizens”: decent, hard-working, law-abiding, temperate, proper, staid, virtuous, and—well, moral. The qualifications for being middle class have gotten a whole lot looser, to say the least.

The European term “middle classes” originally served to describe merchants, tradesmen, investors, and skilled craftsmen. The habitat of these classes was the walled city—the burg, bourg, or borough—hence their appellation, les bourgeois. The bourgeoisie occupied a middle ground between the nobility and the lower classes of peasants and servants.

What Middle Class?

To illustrate this change……the Brookings Institute tries to explain what is happening to America’s Middle Class……

Brookings officially launched a new initiative on the Future of the Middle Class. Through this initiative, we will publish research, analysis, and insights that are motivated by a desire to improve the quality of life for those in America’s middle class and to improve upward mobility into its ranks. We have already wrestled with how we define this group, considered its changing racial composition, and called upon experts to outline major policies geared toward improving its fate. But why all of this attention? Here are seven of the reasons we are worried about the American middle class.

Seven reasons to worry about the American middle class

This study is talking about the traditional working class not the owners of the production….

This combination just makes it easier for the media to sell its ideas to the American voter…..ideas that benefit no one but the corporations that control everything.

Let The Truth Be Known

Conversations With My Granddaughter

For a couple of decades now there has been a debate on who actually controls the truth….and it has gotten worse since the candidacy of Donald trump.

I am always getting visitors that do not seem to know what to believe…..which is a lie for they will believe a lie if it helps prop up their belief in the present……then when they are confronted with something that does not agree with their outlook they question whether it is true or not.

You can’t out-manipulate seasoned manipulators. The main error most people make when trying to deal with a sociopath is to try and manipulate them back. Don’t even try. They have years of experience on you because they literally have done nothing else. While you were laughing and crying and worrying and connecting and relating to people, they were working out how to play humans like Garry Kasparov worked out how to play chess. And when you have literal teams of sociopaths collaborating together to amass power, you my dear child, do not have a chance. Don’t play their game. You will lose.

The only way to win this is to set your compass resolutely to “true.” Always be honest with yourself. Find all the different ways that you are manipulating others and see them and acknowledge them. Find your tribal allegiances and your desire to be right, and tip your hat to their existence. The more self-aware we are, the less levers we have to be manipulated by. If you are blindly partisan or loyal to a particular faction, that makes you gullible to propaganda because your wishful thinking and your desire to be right come into play. Get honest with yourself about who you are and what you want, and you will start to become an playable piece on the board.

Who Controls The Narrative?

Conversations With My Granddaughter

I resurrected this blog as a way for me to offer my thoughts, opinions if you will, on a wide array of subjects and this op-ed is way overdue in these days of political tribalism and division.

Back in the early 20th century Italian socialist Antonio Gramsci, made a important observation…..he observed that the mass media will control a nation’s hegemony….that the mass media will replace thought with an approved way of thinking.

Back in the very early 1990’s there was one 24 hour news outlet, CNN and since those days almost every organization has its version of the 24 hour news cycle.  And thanx to Bubba Clinton those stations are now in control of corporations they no longer hunt for news but a way to drive the nation’s narrative.

Most of human experience is filtered through our mental stories about it, from our sense of self, to our ideas about who we are, to our beliefs about how we’re supposed to behave in society, to what money is and how it works, to where power exists and who we’re supposed to obey. All of these things are purely conceptual constructs which only exist in the realm of thought; a “dollar” exists to the extent that we’ve all agreed to pretend it’s a real thing and that it has a certain amount of purchasing power. At any time we could collectively decide to change the rules about how power functions or what money is and how it operates, and then instantly the rule of the elite class would be over without anyone firing a shot. It really would be that simple.

That’s how powerful a force narrative is, which is why the ruling plutocrats fight so hard to keep us from seizing control of it. This is why whistleblowers and outlets like WikiLeaks are aggressively and constantly smeared and demonized in the corporate media; if they can create suspicion of truth-tellers then they can keep them from being trusted, and thus keep them from being believed. This tool has been used to minimize the impact of everything from on the ground reports of what’s happening in Syria to leak drops from Edward Snowden; if you can create enough suspicion of someone it doesn’t matter if they’re speaking 100 percent truth; nobody will believe them, and thus the dominant narrative will remain the same.

Maintaining an awareness that there is always an unending battle to control the narrative and manipulate it to advance plutocratic interests is an essential part of understanding the world.

That brings us to the use of propaganda….a subject we will discuss later……and a search for the truth…..another subject for a latter day.
